Ahmedabad, 12 November 2013
Unlike abroad, the dedicated Bus Rapid Transit System(BRTS) lanes in Ahmedabad are not entirely dedicated. At number of places, the BRTS buses actually mix with the main road traffic. The drivers it seems are unable to adjust the speed of their bus when in mix lane or at cross roads and circles. In last three years, BRTS buses have killed 12 persons in Ahmedabad in 20 serious accidents.
The latest incident happened yesterday when BRTS bus mowed down 45-year-old Hansa Parmar near RTO circle. According to police complain, the victim’s husband Narendra Parmar said that he was on way to Subhash bridge on a bike at 11.30 am on Monday with his wife who wanted to have some snacks and asked Narendrabhai to take the bike to the snack vendor outside the RTO gate. When bike was turned towards the left side of the road, BRTS bus approaching RTO circle hit the bike. Hansaben fell on the road and sustained severe head injuries. Hansaben was taken to Civil hospital but was declared dead.
