Chhitubhai was one of only three Gujarat MPs elected for seven times on same seat

Surat, 17 December 2013

Former Congress MP Chhitubhai Gamit is no more. He was 71. He passed away today in Bardoli based Sardar hospital due to heart attack.

In the political history of Gujarat, only three members of parliament Somji Damor, Chhitubhai Gamit and Harin Pathak successfully won Lok Sabha polls on same seat for as many as seven times.

Of them, Chhitubhai won south Gujarat’s Mandvi(reserved ST) seat in 1977, 1980, 1984, 1989, 1991, 1996 and 1998. Chhitubhai lost Lok Sabha poll against BJP candidate Mansinh Patel in 1999.

Gamit lost 2002 election against BJP candidate Mohan Dhodia due to candidature of Congress rebel Ishwarbhai Vahia as independent.

Besides mainstream politics, Gamit was also active in sugar cooperatives in Bardoli, Mahuva and Valod talukas of south Gujarat.

Chief Minister Shri Narendra Modi condoled Gamit’s death and tweeted:7-time MP Shri Chhitubhai Gamit will be remembered for his selfless service to the people. Condolences to his family on his demise. RIP.
