Ahmedabad, 26 December 2013
Bharuch based Sardar bridge has been repaired recently and opened for heavy vehicles are five years. If this has given some relief to traffic problem on Ahmedabad-Mumbai national highway, here is another problem – the latest one – that continues to make Ahmedabad-Mumbai road journey unpleasant.
A 43-year-old bridge over the Bhayandar creek on Mumbai-Ahmedabad highway has been shut on Saturday for three months, following cracks on the bridge pillars reported by a Thane Rural police team while patrolling the creek last week. The matter was reported to the National Highways Authority of India(NHAI), which shut the bridge partially on Saturday. The road-over-bridge (ROB) is situated between Kashimira and Naigaon.
Due to heavy traffic on this stretch, the authorities are allowing light vehicles on the two lane bridge. Incoming traffic coming into Mumbai has been diverted towards Thane.
An inspection by the highways authority team revealed that a 48-mt long girder on the bridge had malfunctioned, and it will take at least three months to replace it.
The bridge had been repaired in 2000 after being commissioned in 1970.
Best advice is to travel via train to avoid bottle neck.
