Umang Thakkar arrested, hospitalized, bail plea hearing on Monday

Patang hotel fame, Umang Thakkar, owner of Dharmdev group today filed bail plea in Ahmedabad court after his arrest yesterday by central government’s Service Tax department. The court asked to send Thakkar to Judicial custody and decided to hear his bail plea on Monday. Late in the evening on Saturday, Thakkar was hospitalized at Shahibaug area based Chandramani hospital.
The service tax department arrested Thakkar on Friday for violation of tax provisions.
As per the department sources, Thakkar was arrested for collecting Rs. 2 crore tax from property buyers but not depositing it in government treasury. He was sent to police custody on Friday and presented before the magistrate today.
This is the second arrest in Ahmedabad after the service tax commissionerate got the power to arrest tax defaulters.
