Ahmedabad, 31 January 2014
Bharatiya Kisan Sangh (BKS) will unite castor farmers of Gujarat in Kutch, North and central Gujarat areas over the issue of higher support price for castor seed. BKS has planned over two dozen meetings in castor growing areas of Gujarat in the second week of February. BKS also plans to demonstrate a massive show of strength later on. Farmers will be appealed to not sell their produce at cheaper price.
According to Gujarat BKS president Maganbhai Patel castor farmers are exploited by multinational and their industry agents. For last many years, just handful of corporate players dictate prices. Commodity exchanges and regulators serve interest of multinationals and their agents. The central govt needs to announce minimum support price of Rs. 70,000 and maximum export value of USD 2,000 PMT for castor seed and oil respectively.
India contributes 90% castor production globally, while Gujarat enjoys 90% share in total production of castor in India.
