Rajkot, 4 March 2014
Rampara Vidi in Gujarat, the only gene pool conservation center for Asiatic lions has witnessed birth of three more lion cubs. This is a major success at this site, located outside Gir jungle. A group of Asiatic lions were translocated to Rampara Vidi a few years back for conservation and breeding purpose.
In last three years, Rampara Vidi has become birth place of 8 lion cubs. This includes 3 lion cubs born here last month. Each of three new born is gaining 150 gram weight every day.
Gujarat Forest department had translocated a group of three lions and one lioness to Rampara Vidi in December 2010. After successful breeding in 2011 and 2012, last month lion Babar and lioness Asha gave birth to three cubs which are on feeding at present.
Rampara Vidi which has been strictly banned for any visitor or outsider is developed as a natural habitat of lions at par with Gir. Presently there are five lions and four lionesses. Out of eight lions born here, one has been taken to Junagadh.
