Ahmedabad, 25 March 2014
Congress party has today declared two Gujarat candidates for upcoming Lok Sabha elections.
Recently elected Rajya Sabha MP Madhusudan Mistry(yet to take oath) will contest from Vadodara seat against Gujarat Chief Minister and BJP’s prime ministerial candidate Shri Narendra Modi.
Congress had earlier organized primary election to select the candidate for Vadodara seat. City unit party president Narendra Rawat who won primary election was selected as party’s candidate here. Narendra Modi was not fielded as BJP candidate on this seat at that time.
Today evening, Rawat suddenly withdrew his candidature and requested party president Sonia Gandhi to field stronger candidate against Narendra Modi. Later Madhusudan Mistry’s name was announced as candidate from Delhi.
The other candidate declared today is Himmatsingh Patel who will contest Ahmedabad East seat against BJP candidate and actor Paresh Rawal. Himmatsingh is north Indian Gurjar leader settled in Ahmedabad. He has been Mayor of Ahmedabad city. He has contested assembly elections in the past but unsuccessfully.
Impact assessment
Both Mistry and Himmatsingh Patel have one full month to make best efforts, but unfortunately for them, at least this yeare, these both seats are difficult for them to win. Of course both of them will make one-sided poll on these seats interesting.
