Narendrabhai mentions Jashodaben as life partner in affidavit before EC, rivals start politicizing it, Modi’s brother issues a statement

Gujarat Chief Minister and BJP prime ministerial candidate Shri Narendra Modi has for the first time mentioned his wife Jashodaben’s name as life partner in affidavit filed before the election commission with his nomination for Vaddoara seat. Narendrabhai left his home to serve the nation. While Modi is living bachelor life, his wife, a retired teacher lives with her brothers and pray for her husband’s good without having any complain.

Legal Issues:

Marriage when Shri Narendra Modi was a minor

• The marriage of Shri Narendra Modi took place in late 1960’s, before he attained the age of 18. Therefore, Shri Narendra Modi was ‘a minor’ when he got married.

• Furthermore, the marriage was decided by the two families several years earlier during Shri Modi’s childhood.

• Shri Narendra Modi got married at a point of time, where no individual had either attained the right age or level of maturity to make such decisions about their lives.

Moral Dimension: Shri Modi’s silence

• Shri Narendra Modi has never ever denied that his marriage took place.

• One can scan any speech, interview, press conference, media interaction, Blog, literary work, his own Tweets, FB posts, etc. – nowhere, has he claimed that the marriage did not take place.

• In the last decade, there has neither been the need, nor the occasion for Shri Modi to discuss his private life. Anyway, discussing personal life of leaders is against our ethos.

• Thus, any statement that questions Shri Modi’s silence is not only inconsistent with facts but also is personal slander of the lowest nature.

• Having been unable to prove any other allegation against Shri Modi, this is the level this cottage industry is stooping to.

Respecting the dignity of women

• One very important reason why Shri Modi has preferred not to talk about the issue is because he has ‘utmost respect’ towards the dignity of women.

• Shri Narendra Modi does not believe in doing anything that could in anyway harm the ‘privacy and dignity of a woman’.

• It should also be noted that his wife has pursued a noble profession of teaching children and financially self-dependent. Thus, Shri Modi’s silence has given her both the required space and the desired privacy to pursue his vocation and live a dignified life.

Service over self

• From a very young age, Shri Narendra Modi had decided that he is going to selflessly devote himself towards serving Mother India and her children.

• He has been deeply inspired by the likes of Gautama Buddha and Swami Vivekananda, two individuals who have always placed service over self, even if it meant rising above familial and other such obligations.

• Immediately after his marriage, Shri Narendra Modi went to the Himalayas for two years and he never returned home. He dedicated himself to Organisational work in the RSS. He also told his Jashodhaben to devote herself to academics so that she can have independent life.

Keeping in view the social milieu Shri Modi and Jashodhaben grew up, this emphasis on education to a girl, was a very farsighted way of thinking.

• Thus, he has left every family obligation answering a larger calling to serve the people of India to fulfill their aspirations. Since his youth, every single moment of his life has been dedicated to the service of our motherland.

• A Sanskrit Shloka says:

॥त्यजेदेकं कुलस्यार्थे, ग्रामस्यार्थे कुलं त्यजेत ।
ग्रामं जनपदस्यार्थे आत्मार्थं पृथिवीं त्यजेत ॥ (One should sacrifice one’s self-interest for the sake of one’s family, one’s family for the sake of one’s town members, one’s town members for the sake of one’s nation, and sacrifice the whole earth for the sake of one’s soul’s enlightenment.)

• The path of renunciation is one of the ‘purest and most revered’ aspects of our culture. It takes ‘great strength of character’ and ‘moral courage’ to leave behind everything and devote one’s self to service. Shri Modi is one of the rare individuals, who have done that.

• In the history of humankind, there are examples of remarkable individuals who have treaded the same path as Shri Modi. The example of Gautama Buddha is very well known. He left his family, a princely kingdom and established a spiritual path that lives on even today.

• Another luminary who has treaded on the same path is Ramakrishna Paramhansa.

Additional Issues

• Shri Modi and Jashodhaben have been living separately since their marriage (for the last 45-50 years) without any connection whatsoever.

• Jashodhaben retains her maiden surname till date.

Details Disclosed in Previous Nomination Papers – Shri Modi’s previous nomination papers

• Shri Narendra Modi has filed nomination papers 4 times in the past- twice in 2002, once in 2007 and most recently in 2012.

• Shri Modi’s declaration regarding the property details of Jashodhaben have been consistent throughout, including most recently in 2014.

• Having lived separately for the last 45-50 years, Shri Modi is unaware about the property details etc. of Jashodhaben. That is why he indicated a “ – “ in the earlier affidavits and has written “Not known” this time.

• In September, 2013 the Hon’ble Supreme Court has given an important judgment that called for filling of all columns in a nomination form and nothing should be left blank.

• This judgment by the Hon’ble Supreme Court has mandated the use of only 3 options- “Nil”, “Not Known” and “Not Applicable”.

• We should be very clear that this judgment is prospective and not retrospective.

• It should be categorically noted that the nomination form does not mandate a candidate to declare his or her marital status and the name of the spouse. Nonetheless, keeping in mind the spirit of the judgment by the highest court of the land, Shri Modi has voluntarily shared this information.

• Shri Modi is aware that sections of media, vested interest groups and the opposition would stoop to abysmal lows by raking up his personal life especially because all their previous efforts to tarnish his image have resulted in miserable failure. Yet, he preferred to share these details.

Dr. Manmohan Singh’s Election Affidavit in 2013

• Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh filed his papers for renomination to the Rajya Sabha from Assam in May, 2013.

• In his nomination papers filed he has not declared the name of his wife.

• In fact, several candidates do not write the names of their spouse and dependents, only furnish their details.

A Gujarati news channel today spokes to Jashodaben’s brother, according to whom Jashodaben is presently on Chaar dhaam yatra. Jashodaben’s brother said she has taken pledge to not to remain barefoot and not to eat rice till the time Narendra Modi becomes Prime Minister.

Modhwadia at new low, Shankersinh differs

Modi’s rival candidate on Vadodara seat Madhusudan Mistry and Gujarat Congress president Arjun Modhwadia both were at new low today. They both addressed media over Modi’s completely personal life issue. At Gujarat Congress headquarters in Ahmedabad, the women’s cell of party shouted slogans against Modi over this issue, which was ridiculously new low in Gujarat Congress’s history. However leader of opposition Shankersinh Vaghela had different opinion on this issue.

One should not meddle in personal lives of others… I am witness to the fact that Modi has not led a married life, said leader of opposition in Gujarat Shankersinh Vaghela. He said that this has to be understood in the wake of the recent SC judgment that calls for greater clarity in nomination papers.Vaghela even said that both Narendra Modi and Jashodhaben have said they are not divorced and that what has been filled in the papers is a legal formality that has to be completed. He reiterated that he does not approve of the manner in which there are attacks of others’ personal lives.
