New Delhi, 13 May, 2014
Five years back in 2009, the cost of holding Lok Sabha elections in India was Rs. 1483 crore. In 2014 this coast has jumped to Rs. 3416 crore, making it the costliest Lok Sabha polls so far in India.
The Election Commission attributed the jump in official expenses inflation besides a series of measures undertaken to increase voting figures for the substantial rise in poll expenditure. Voter awareness campaigns, distribution of voter slip ahead of election date, use of Voter Verified Paper Audit Trail for the first time in these polls pushed the expenditure further.
In the first polls held in 1952, the total expenditure was Rs. 10.45 crore while cost per elector was 60 paise which became Rs 12 in 2009.
