Congress MLAs suspended, stage walkout in Gujarat Assembly

Gandhinagar, 4 July, 2014

All MLAs of Gujarat Congress barring Leader of opposition Shankersinh Vaghela and former Leader of opposition Shaktisinh Gohil were suspended from the house for a day following ruckus they created inside and outside the well of the assembly.

The Congress MLAs alleged that they were not getting replies of their questions by ruling party. They started creating ruckus by shouting slogans and rushing to well. After their suspension from the house, Congress MLAs met Speaker to discuss the issue.

Slogans, suspensions, walk-outs have become daily feature in Gujarat assembly right from the beginning of this session which started on 1st of July and will end on 30th of this month.

Shankersinh Vaghela shares detail on why Congress was protesting:

In his talk to media persons, Shankersinh Vaghela said: Congress MLA Chandrikaben Baria had asked a question regarding Vanbandhu scheme of state government. She was put under pressure to not to attend the house during discussion of this question. However she was firm to attend the house. The concerned minister later canceled her question. As her question was not mentioned in the discussion, Baria along with two other women MLAs of Congress rushed to well. They were suspended for a day for their protest in well. There’s a policy of BJP government that they give chance to raise question if it comes from ruling party benches, while opposition faces injustice. Forget about oral question, even written question that has been accepted by government is canceled when they feel it may put government in difficult position. To give voice to people’s issues is moral responsibility of MLAs. Government should see that questions raised by MLAs are not canceled and they get proper time for discussion. Written questions by 6 MLAs were canceled. A meeting was held with Speaker after the proceedings of house were over.
