Ganesh Visarjan in Surat was peaceful mainly because diversion of route of visarjan procession from Muslim area to Hindu area.
Limbayat Madeena Masjid road is Muslim populated area where several Ganesh bhaktas attacked by Muslims have lost their life in the past. In 1999 police had to fire round following clash between Hindus and Muslims during Ganesh Visarjan procession. Since then, on every Ganesh visarjan day, it has been a challenge for police to maintain law and order in this locality.
In last two years, police employed all effort to change the route of Ganesh processions. Last year, three Ganesh utsav organizers were convinced to change the route, but this year police got success to convince all Ganesh utsav organizers, and they were diverted to other road. About 1,000 Ganesh murtis were to pass from this route. They were all diverted to other route to prevent communal clash.
