Gandhinagar, 13 October 2014

Nanavati Commission which is probing into the 2002 Godhra Train Burning incident and the subsequent communal riots in the state is likely to submit its probe report by the end of this month. The report is likely to be tabled in Gujarat assembly during two days long session on 10/11 November.

Last month, Nanavati Commission had sought one month extension from the Gujarat Government to submit its final report. Accordingly the government granted extension upto 31st October. This was 24th extension for the commission ever since it was constituted on March 6, 2002.

The two-member commission consisting of Justices (retired) G T Nanavati and Akshay Mehta has been probing into the 2002 Godhra Train Burning incident and the subsequent communal riots in the state.

The Commission has already given its first report pertaining to the incident of burning the S-6 coach of Sabarmati Express in which 59 Kar Sevaks were charred to death near Godhra Railway Station on February 27, 2002. The Commission had called the incident as a pre-planned conspiracy involving ‘some individuals’.

The Commission was consisting of Justices (Retired) G T Nanavati and K G Shah. However, following the death of Shah in March 2008, Justice (Retired) Akshay Mehta was appointed as the second member of the Commission.
