Vadodara, 13 November 2014
52 years ago in 1962, a Gaekwadi era swinging bridge had collapsed in Kamatibaug in Vadodara. The Vadodara Municipal Corporation(VMC) will now build an iconic suspension bridge at the same place, ground breaking of which shall take place on 14 November.
The bridge that collapsed in 1962 on the day of Fugga Agiyaras was 80 years old due to overcrowding. Though none was dead, several persons were injured in that incident. Now after 52 years the VMC is going to start the works to rebuild the bridge.
The bridge will be placed between pipe line of zoo and Bal bhawan approach. VMC plans to develop picnic point, food plaza, decorative lighting and media gallery to host exhibitions here. The project will be developed with budget of Swarnim Jayanti Mukhyamantri Shaheri Vikas Yojana phase-2 at a cost of Rs. 13,15,00,000. VMC has fixed ten months time period to complete the work of this 82.5 meter long, 4.75 meter wide bridge that can hold weight of 1,000 persons at one go. Strong metal suspension ropes and steel structure of bridge will save it against Vishwamitri river’s flood. The task could be handed over to L&T for smooth completion.
