Thursday’s Krushi Mahotsav function at Jasdan canceled

District Agriculture office of Rajkot, Government of Gujarat today canceled Thursday’s Ravi Krushi Mahotsav function in Jasdan town following a death of farmer Arvind Nagani(21). Senior Most minister of Gujarat Shri Nitin Patel was to attend this function at Jasdan.

A decision to cancel Jasdan function was taken afer an incident of self immolation at Vinchhiya agriculture market yard which is close to Jasdan. Arvind Nagani (21), a resident of Dharai town in Surendranagar district, committed suicide today by immolating himself at Vinchhiya town marketing yard premises in Rajkot district. Arvind committed suicide after failing to get higher Minimum Support Price (MSP) for his cotton crop. Initially, Arvind with 90% burn injury was given primary treatment at a nearby hospital and later referred to the Rajkot civil hospital for further treatment. Arvind was critical when he was shifted here and he died after being treated briefly.

Farmers in Gujarat have been agitating since the last month demanding an increase in MSP of cotton and groundnut crops.

Arvind first went to toilet area of market yard and consumed pesticide. It was followed by self immolation using kerosene and matchstick.

Vinchhiya belt of rural Rajkot, which has good presence of Congress supporters influenced by former MP Kunvarjibhai Bavalia is going to observe bandh on Thursday. RSS affiliated Bharatiya Kisan Sangh which is the largest farmer organization of Gujarat has given call of boycott of Ravi Krushi Mahotsav. Congress party has already declared that it will show black flags to ministers in Ravi Krushi Mahotsav events. BJP moved its former Jasdan MLA for damage control.

After Boghra’s conversation with Gandhinagar, a decision was taken to cancel the programme in Jasdan.

Nitin Patel was scheduled to attend Jasdan Krushi Mahotsav and Rajkot Saras fair inauguration functions. It is not clear whether he will attend Rajkot Saras fair function or not.
