Gujarat govt to give major thrust to Marine product industry to boost coastal area development

For the first time Gujarat Government has included ‘Marine Product development industries’ under the Industrial Policy 2015 as the thrust area to boost human and economic development in the ‘Sagar Khedu’ talukas in the backward areas of the coastal region.

The new Industrial policy noted that, “to provide large and improved livelihood opportunities in the populace in the ‘Sagar Khedu Talukas’ marine product industry development is one of the key area. The production of bulk of the marine catch comprises oil sardines, followed by penaeid and non-penaeid shrimps, Indian mackerel, bombay duck, crokers, smaller quantities of cephalopods, other sarines and threadfin breams. There is huge scope for investment in packaged marine products for ready to use in Indian and foreign market. Fish is the principal export item and largest export item in terms of value. Government will promote establishment of marine product based parks in the Public Private Partnership(PPP). It will also give incentive for developing storage and distribution facilities.”

Sources in the stat Government informed that, “soon the government will announce a special scheme for the holistic promotion of the marine product industry in state under which financial and other incentives will be given to Large Fisheries Indian trawlers, deep sea fishing, quality processing and packaging of the marine products, establishment of the marine based industrial parks under the new policy.”

Marine Cluster in Ahmedabad and Surat soon

The state government has planned to develop a new Marine Cluster at Ahmedabad and Surat where different type of Port and port related services like port related legal processing, port related administrative and promotional activities will be promoted. At present such activities is only available in Mumbai and Chennai. It will also sign an MOU with a reputed International agency during the Vibrant Summit next week.
