Antibodies have been the fastest growing area of therapeutics for the last decade and the trend towards antibody-based therapeutics is anticipated to accelerate in the years ahead. Their utility is extensive, with applications in many diseases including cancer, infectious disease and autoimmunity.
The Centre for Commercialization of Antibodies and Biologics (CCAB), a Canadian Federally-funded Centre of Excellence for Commercialization and Research (CECR), which was formed to provide a development and commercialization platform for one of the world’s strongest antibody and biologics research communities, has to its credit of having developed almost 800 human antibodies that are genuine therapeutic candidates. CCAB now wants to Introduce Breakthrough Cancer Drugs globally including India.
CCAB is coming to India to explore potential partnerships. CEO Dr. Sachdev Sidhu, who is visiting Ahmedabad, Gujarat on 10th February , is one of the top international researchers in the area of antibodies and biologics, Canada born but with Indian heritage. The first step starts on Feb 11th, 2015, when the Canada India Business Exchange (CIBX) and their partners Confederation of Indian Industries (CII) are hosting a think tank meeting for Dr. Sidhu and Dr. Jason Moffatt of CCAB, with many of India’s leading CROs, pharmaceutical companies and regulators. This meeting will be held in Ahmedabad, Gujarat.
“I have been following Prime Minister Modi’s platforms for collaborative international innovation and research. These policies seek, among other things, to leverage the wealth of talent that India has in the area of clinical research. CCAB would like to see a coupling of its world class research capabilities in the area of antibodies and biologics with the best of India’s clinical research companies. Such a coupling should enable us to accelerate the development of therapeutic products and reduce the related costs. Lower costs of development will result in drugs being available at lower prices to patients.” said Dr. Sidhu.
“We are excited to put this meeting together for CCAB, along with our CII partners. We have had to increase the attendance limit a couple of times due to demand. As Canadian legal counsel to CCAB, I have come to know the extraordinary potential of its work. Partnering with the best of India’s drug development community could materially accelerate the commercialization of much needed therapeutics for a wide spectrum of diseases. It is going to be very exciting to have leadership from both communities meet under one roof in Ahmedabad.” said Craig Brown, the Chairman of CIBX and a partner with the Canadian law firm Fasken Martineau DuMoulin LLP.
