The desire for a male child has resulted in a woman in Karnataka giving birth to 15 daughters over 15 years. Sethaanibai, a resident of Sindhol Thanda in Karnataka’s Bidar District, has lost six of those 15 girls she has given birth to. Both Sethaanibai and her husband Govardhan Rathod are daily wage labourers. Rathod, who works in Mumbai, has not returned home since Sethaanibai gave birth to their 15th child – also a girl – on June 11. Neither does he take her phone calls. Sethaanibai deserted her 15th child at a local government hospital due to abject poverty. She criticised the government for not helping her to manage her large family. Three of her daughters are married, while the remainder work as coolies. Thee department of women and child welfare has promised to lend Sethaanibai Rs. 1 lakh, and to put her seven-year-old daughter into a hostel.
