Prime Minister Narendra Modi assured distressed sugarcane farmers of speedy payment of their dues through government schemes. Modi met with sugarcane farmers from across 43 districts in Uttar Pradesh, at his Delhi residence. Sugarcane millers have not paid up for farmers’ cane crop this year as falling sugar prices have hit their income. Modi said provisions would be made to pay the farmers directly through the Prime Minister’s Jan Dhan Yojana (Scheme for People’s Wealth). He added that millers would have to pay 50 percent of the dues to the farmers or else they could not avail of the government scheme themselves. The scheme plans to end “financial untouchability” to ensure the majority of households in the country of nearly 1.3 billion people have a bank account within months. Farmers appreciated Modi’s concern for them.
