Indian Army unit generates coking gas through innovative method

An Indian army unit in Jammu and Kashmir generates cooking gas by using food waste, decomposable organic material and kitchen waste. The cooking gas produced from the waste materials consisting methane and a little amount of carbon-dioxide is an alternative fuel for liquefied petroleum gas (LPG). Lieutenant Colonel of Indian army, RK Nair said nearly 40 kilogram waste materials from three kitchens were disposed off efficiently without any odour or flies and the digested slurry from the bio-gas unit could be used as manure. Nair said the army unit has decided to increase the gas production, which could be used for five hours to cook food materials. The major components of the plant are a digester tank – which is used for collecting the waste materials and grinding it – gas holder tank, an outlet for the digested slurry and a gas delivery system for taking out and utilising the produced gas. A single burner bio-gas stove is attached to gas holder tank through pipes.
