Sardar Patel international airport in Ahmedabad will operate on solar power in next couple of years period.
The airport presently consumes 25,500 MW power every year and pays Rs 21 crore electricity bill. Thus per month bill stays at around Rs 1.75 crore. The Airport Authority of India(AAI) plans 700 kw solar panels over rooftop of domestic and international terminals which will be used for lighting. To protect the panels from monkeys and birds, solar power operated electric fencing will be installed on boundary. Presently the old runway lights are replaced with LED lights for power saving.
Early this month, Kochi airport in Kerala state got its own solar power plant to become the first solar power operated airport.
