Handling capacity of Surat airport terminal has doubled due to aerobridge connection on the first floor.
Earlier only ground floor of terminal was utilized due to lack of aerobridge on the first floor. Now with two aerobridges connected, the first floor is also ready to handle the passngers. Handling capacity has thus gone up from 240(0nly ground floor) to over 500(ground floor plus aerobridges connected first floor).
There are options of lift and escalator available for passengers to reach first floor.
Two aerobridges installed were lying in idle condition for last 8 months in airport campus. The overall cost including purchase and installation is Rs 5.5 crore. The aerobridge that were installed last week is still under testing. After about a week long testing, they will get approval from the Director General of Civil Aviation(DGCA). Air India is launching a new Delhi-Surat flight with 168-seat capacity airbus from 1st October. The aerobridges are likely to be made functional with that.
