Bangladesh CJ for concerted effort to end the ‘depravity’ called ISIS

Gandhinagar

Condemning terrorism and the excesses committed by ISIS, Chief Justice of Bangladesh Supreme Court, Surendra Kumar Sinha today stressed on the need for a concerted and deliberate effort by the international community to bring the wickedness of this international terror organisation to an end.

Delivering a lecture in the Gujarat National Law University, Justice Sinha, the first Hindu head of the supreme judicial body of the neighbouring country, said, ‘Over the past few months ISIS threat of savagery has featured the burning alive of a Jordanian pilot, mass slaughter of Egyptian christian workers, destruction of antiquities in addition to its beheading, stoning, limb amputating and crucifying people.’

He said, ‘the need to put an end to the depravity that is ISIS is yet to be met with a concerted, deliberate effort capable of securing the result.’

Taking about terrorism Justice Sinha said that both India and Bangladesh were a victim of this evil. He said the fundamental motive to bring social or political change by violence, Creating fear by hitting civilian targets and using illegal arms or explosives for it were the three most common characteristics of the various formal definitions of terrorism.

‘It is a very complex and challenging task to address the terrorism phenomenon. While the condemnation of the terrorist activities by the international community has been unanimous and unequivocal, the efforts taken so far to regulated or combat this have been marred by differences of approach and poor competency of the affected countries,’ he said adding it was one of the threats against which the international community above all the States must stand together to protect their citizens.

Justice Sinha however said that it was very difficult to understand why people become terrorists to target the humanity. ‘In Bangladesh the risks and vulnerability created by terrorism have become a serious threat to our national life, security, economy, political and religious pluralism.,’ he said.

In a veiled reference to the killing of secular bloggers he said, ‘incidents of religious assassinations, political violence and bombing in public places sometimes stun the entire nation.’

Justice Sinha said that his peace loving country was doing all it can do to fight terrorism.
