Rajkot origin IFS Sujan Chinoy is India’s new envoy to Japan

Senior diplomat Sujan R Chinoy has been appointed as India’s Ambassador to Japan, succeeding Deepa Gopalan Wadhwa.
Chinoy, a 1981-batch Indian Foreign Service officer, is currently serving as India’s Ambassador to Mexico.
He is expected to take up his assignment shortly, the Ministry of External Affairs said.
Before assuming charge of India’s Ambassador to Mexico in August 2012, Chinoy was Additional Secretary in the National Security Council Secretariat in the PMO where he dealt with strategic policy and national security issues.
He had served in the Indian Missions in Hong Kong and Beijing. He was also Consul General of India in Shanghai and in Sydney. He had also worked at the Permanent Mission of India to the United Nations in New York.
Bilateral ties between India and Japan are on an upswing and both sides have resolved to expand ties in a range of key areas including trade and investment. PTI

A proud son of Gujarat Shri Sujan R Chinoy Shri Chinoy belongs to Rajkot in Gujarat. His grand father barrister CN Chinoy was Rajkot state’s Diwan in pre-independence time.
Born on 27th of September, 1958, Shri Chinoy completed his primary education in Rajkot based Rajkumar college. He completed BA with English literature and Psychology in Vadodara’s MS University. He received MBA in Marketing in Ahmedabad.
Shri Chinoy is expert in China and East Asia related issues. He has visited communist countries with Indian leaders several times. Shri Chinoy was India’s Consulate General at Shanghai between 2002 and 2005. He later worked as India’s Consul General in Sidney.
Shri Chinoy worked at Indian missions in Hong kong and Beijing in 1980s. He accompanied late Prime Minister Shri Rajiv Gandhi in 1988, former President Shri R Venkatraman in 1992 and former President Shri RK Narayanan in year 2000 during their China visit. Shri Chinoy played important role to improve India-China relation in post-Pokhran II time.
Shri Chinoy has worked as Deputy Secretary and Under Secretary in China related issues in East-Asia wing of India’s foreign ministry. He also worked as Under Secretary in America wing. He worked as Officer on special duty in foreign ministry’s press relation wing.
During 1992-1995 Shri Chinoy worked as first Secretary/Counselor in Indian mission in the United Nations at New york. He represented India on issues ranging from non-proliferation and international security to disarmament in general body meeting of the United Nations. In 1990s he worked in India’s Riyadh based consul office as counselor(political) and then worked for four years in Delhi as Director of China related affairs. During this time he worked for peace and mutual trust on line of actual control on India/China border.
Shri Chinoy can speak Chinese language very well. He also has command over French, German, Arabic and Kriol languages.
He was Additional Secretary in the Ministry of External Affairs before his appointment as ambassador of Mexico.
