Shyamji Krishna Verma was from Mandvi town in Kutch. Modi had brought back Shyamji’s ashes from Britain and also made a memorial in Mandvi when he was the Chief Minister of Gujarat.

With this certificate, Verma, who was disbarred from one of Britain’s leading law society for advocating independence for India over a century ago, has been posthumously reinstated to the Bar.

Now, this certificate will be kept in ‘Kranti Tirth’, a memorial of Verma built in the port town of Mandvi in Kutch, where he was born in 1857.

Verma, who is also known as ‘Krantiguru’, was born on October 4, 1857, in Mandvi. As a tribute to the freedom fighter, who died on March 30, 1930 in Geneva, the Kutch University has been named after him.

In 2010, Modi, when he was Gujarat CM, inaugurated the Kranti Tirth memorial. This memorial is a replica of ‘India House’ in north London.

India House was established by Verma as a base for Indian students studying in England. He was also the founder of the Indian Home Rule Society.

After a long time, Modi was seen delivering his speech in Gujarati. Modi started his address with a line in Kutchi language and later switched over to Gujarati. He said he came to Gujarat after becoming Prime Minister, but could visit Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar only, but the next destination has been Kutch now. He said the local BJP minister just told him that this was his 90th Kutch visit. He added that he had not kept account of his number of visits to Kutch but local newspapers might have done that job. Prime Minister in his speech also said that British government seized barrister license of two lawyers in India and they both were from Gujarat – one was Mahatma Gandhi and other was Shyamji Krushna Verma. Mahatma Gandhi’s bar membership was reinstated in 1988, but who for Shyamji? Modi said, Indian origin ministers and British PM made attempts and after a meeting on 9 November they took a decision in favor of late Shyamji Krishna Verma. Modi recalled he had brought Shyamji’s ashes back in India carrying on his shoulder. Modi mentioned that he was told 8 lakh people had visited Rann Utsav in Kutch so far. ‘Rann which was not looked at by even people of Kutch, but now it has become Toran of India’, he added.
