Speaking at Hajipur after inaugurating the newly constructed Digha-Sonepur rail-cum-road bridge, the Prime Minister today highlighted number of road, rail, power, gas works his government has completed and planned for Bihar in particular and eastern India in general.

Aboutt he bridge he inaugurated, the Prime Minister said: this project was conceived during the time when Shri Nitish Kumar was railway minister and Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee was the Prime Minister. In last ten years this project was neglected. If they had spent routine budget for this work, it could be completed before five-seven years. The project was originally worth Rs 600 crore, but due to delay the cost jumped to Rs 3,000 crore as of today. This is public money. Development of this project was obstructed due to several reasons. In last 18 month ever since the present government came to power, the project witnessed highest speed. As much as 34% leftover work has been completed in this period. We believe that if India’s sustainable development has to be achieved, the eastern parts of India need to witness constant progress for next 20-15 years, or otherwise India can’t be developed. Faster the pace of development in eastern India, faster we get developed India.

The Prime Minister called Eastern India as nerve center of India’s development. He said the govt can’t develop Eastern India through a short cut.

Till now we touched immediate issues and addressed them, but now the time demands that we address not just immediate issues but put long term system in place. It is essential, the Prime Minister said.

He said that compared to last five years of previous government in centre, the present government has spent 2.5 time more money in last 18 months when it comes to infrastructure.

“It’s my conviction that if we want to change India’s fortune, we will need first to change Bihar,” the Prime Minister said.

Shri Modi in reference to recently presented budget told people that gas cylinders will be given to 5 crore below poverty line families in next 3 years under the central government’s ambitious plan.

Shri Modi said two locomotive factories are coming up in Bihar.

“Since 2006-07 these plants were just on paper and the idea was useful for speeches, but there was nothing on the ground. No one was ready for even tenders. We did something innovative. Export targets were made and domestic needs too were declared. The strategy worked. Global major companies thought they can now go. There will be foreign direct investment of Rs 40,000 crore on these two locations of Bihar. India’s biggest facility will come up. The procedures are over, ” said PM adding that in 18 months span of present government, Bihar has been a priority state because to develop India, development of Bihar is unavoidable.

Shri Modi also spoke about his government’s ambitious power supply scheme under which all unelectrified villages are going to be electrified. He said the work is going on in this direction and over 6,000 villages have already received power. Maximum benefit of this scheme is going to reach Uttar Pradesh and Bihar.

Shri Modi said Nitish Kumar government is extending full cooperation for implementation of this scheme. He said the way the work is going on, he has full faith that the task will be accomplished.

Modi also spoke about some announcements made in recent railway budget such as Deendayal coaches in long distance trains that can be useful for last-minute passengers. He also spoke about third AC trains for common people.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi today inaugurated three major railway projects in Bihar at an estimated cost of Rs 7000 crore.

PM dedicated a rail-cum-road bridge at Patna, inaugurated another at Munger and laid the foundation of additional bridge at Mokama over the River Ganga.

“Total cost of these three bridges is about Rs 7200 crore and these bridges will go a long way in giving connectivity to north and south Bihar, said a senior Railway Ministry official adding “It will also help in development of North Bihar.”

Modi laid foundation stone of second Mokama double line railway bridge adjacent to existing Rajendra Pul.

“PM dedicated Patna Ganga bridge (4.56 km) to the nation and inaugurated the freight operation through Munger rail-cum-road bridge,” he said.

There are three bridges over the entire 460 km length of the river Ganga in Bihar – one road bridge at Naugachia, a rail-cum-road bridge at Mokama and the third road bridge Mahatma Gandhi Setu at Patna.

The inadequate number of bridges had become one of the reasons hindering the development of one of the most populous state in the country.
