In order to minimize waiting time for passengers booking unreserved tickets, railways today launched hand held terminals for the benefit of suburban and short distance commuters.
The unreserved ticketing system serves nearly two crore passengers for purchase of unreserved tickets daily through nearly 12,300 counters at 5864 locations and generating approximately Rs 59 crores of revenue per day for railways.
We are now providing hand held terminals (HHT) for unreserved tickets, Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu said in Mumbai while launching the scheme through video conferencing.
The HHT was launched at Nizamuddin station as a pilot project.
The HHT was announced in the budget also and the devices are expected to reduce queue length at booking windows and passengers need not stand in long queues.
These terminals will work in disconnected mode and being portable, tickets can be sold in the non ticket booking zone of railway premises. These terminals can issue platform ticket, monthly season tickets and journey tickets for adult, child and senior citizens.
