Indian Railways has launched a new initiative known as “Janani Sewa” at Surat railway station to benefit children by providing hot milk, hot water and baby food items and children’s menu items in trains.

Other stations under Western Railway where this facility has been initiated are Mumbai Central, Church gate and Borivali.

Under Janani, baby food etc branded products will be sold as per printed price. Additionally 250 ml milk will also be sold as per printed price. To get hot milk and sugar, the passenger will have to pay additional Rs 2.

Janani Sewa was prompted by an incident that occurred recently where a mother and child suffered due to non availability of baby food and milk while travelling in a long distance train. The mother complained about her problem on a social networking site of Indian Railways expressing miseries due to non availability of infant food like milk on the trains. Taking note of her problem, Minister of Railways responded quickly and instantly arranged to serve hot milk to her baby at the next station itself.

Taking a cue from this incident Minister for Railways Suresh Prabhu in his Budget for 2016-17 announced a policy initiative to make available food for children beses hot water, milk and baby food. In tune with this policy, South Central Railway also introduced Janani Sewa outlets from June 9.

Railways took special interest to ensure availability of Janani Sewa services extensively at all major Railway Stations and on board important long distance trains. Janani Sewa outlet with hot milk, hot water and baby food items has been started at Surat railway station accordingly.
