January 15, 2017
New Delhi:Cricketer-comedy show actor-turned-politician Navjot Singh Sidhu today joined Congress ahead of February 4 assembly election in Punjab after meeting Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi. Sidhu’s wife Navjot Kaur had already joined Congress in November last year. Earlier, Pargat Singh, a former Akali Dal MLA who formed Awaaz-E Punjab with Sidhu had also joined Congress after Sidhu husband wife resigned from BJP. Sidhu was made Rajya Sabha MP by BJP, but he had suddenly announced his resignation to stay in Punjab politics. Sidhu’s wife who was BJP MLA also had resigned from the party. Both husband-wife were uncomfortable with BJP-Akali alliance in Punjab and critical about Akali govt in the state. They wanted BJP to leave alliance with Akali and fight separately in Punjab assembly polls with Navjot Singh Sidhu as Chief Ministerial face. When he was doing election campaign for BJP, Sidhu was very vocally critical about AAP and Congress, but he had started flirting with both after leaving BJP. Sidhu had expressed his view that he wanted to be in Punjab state politics and not in Rajya Sabha.
