Gujaratis in Padma Award 2017 list

Ahmedabad: The Centre on Wednesday announced the list of Padma awardees which included names of Gujarat based Jain monk Shri Ratna Sundar Maharaj for Padma Bhushan. He has beem chosen in ‘Others-Spiritualism’ category.

Veteran Gujarati sugam sangit singer Shri Purushottam Upadhyay(art-music), Shri VG Patel(literature and education), Shri Vishnu Pandya(literature and education-journalism), Dr Subroto Das(medicine), Dr. Devendra Dahyabhai Patel(medicine), Bhawana Somaya(literature and education-journalism), HR Shah(NRI/PIO, Literature & Education-Journalism), Genabhai Patel(others-agriculture), Dr Subroto Das(medicine) and Bipin Ganatra are other Gujaratis/Gujarat based personalities who are being felicitated with Padma Shri awards this year.

Among them, Shah lives in USA and runs TV Asia, Dr Subroto Das is settled in Ahmedabad and rescues people, injured in accident on highways, Gujarati origin Bipin Ganatra lives in Kolkata and works as fire volunteer, Bhawana Somaya is based at Mumbai and senior film-journalist. Dr Devendra Patel is Gujarat’s senior most cancer surgeon based in Ahmedabad, Purushottam Upadhyay is popular Gujarati sugam sangit singer/composer who has given number of popular songs, Genabhai Patel is divyang farmer from Banaskantha, Shri Vishnu Pandya is senior journalist, political commentator who has authored number of books on politics and political history of Gujarat.
