Versova creek bridge on Mumbai – Gujarat highway likely to reopen this month

Mumbai: The 47-year-old Versova creek bridge on the Mumbai-Ahmedabad National Highway is likely to reopen for traffic on May 20 after repair work that started from May 14. Heavy vehicles on Mumbai – Gujarat – Delhi route is diverted to Ghodbunder road. The bridge after proper cementing, structuring and testing will be reopened only after clearance from the state government and the traffic department and Thane police. IRB company which built this bridge on BOT model will pay for the repairs. Around 50,000 vehicles use this 49-meter bridge daily. The bridge was closed for heavy traffic on September 15 last year following horizontal cracks on a girder. Motorists at present wait for about half and hour or more in each direction to cross the bridge due to traffic and speed limit which is 20 km per hour.
