Money lending to tribal to be possible with permission from Gram Sabha instead of Panchayat; amendment passed in Gujarat assembly
February 26, 2018
Gandhinagar: The Gujarat Assembly today passed Nana Dhirnar Karnara Babat(Sudhara) Vidheyak unopposed.
According to Minister of State Ishwarsin Patel, the bill proposed to give power to Gramsabha for granting permission related to money lending to tribal rather than Gram Panchayat.
As per the constitution, a money lender can lend money to tribal person living in tribal area only with prior permission of gram panchayat of concerned village. However, as per the Panchayat provisions, similar power has been assigned to Gramsabha also.
With amendment passed in the assembly, provision has been made to give power to Gramsabha for approval to lend and borrow money in case of tribal member of village. With this a tribal villager will get approval for money lending/borrowing from Gramsabha instead of Gram panchayat.
