BJP snatches Tripura from Communists in historic win
March 03, 2018
Ahmedabad: Ruling Bharatiya Janata Party(BJP) led by party president Amit Shah is set to rule another state. This latest one is Tripura and it is in North East India, where BJP’s rise was once considered impossible. BJP has snatched Tripura from communists who were ruling the state for last 25 years.
This is historic and shinning victory for BJP. Just look at the figures of previous general election of assembly in Tripura. It was in 2013. BJP had contested 50 of total 60 assembly seats in Tripura. Of them, BJP lost deposit in 49 seats. Now five years later, in 2018, the party is set to rule Tripura with clear majority on its own.Out of 59 seats, BJP has got 33 seats, Communists are shrunk to 18 seats while IPFT is at 6. IPFT is in alliance with BJP.
It’s worth noting that in 2013, BJP’s vote share was just 1.5% against Communists’ 48% and Congress’s 36%. Now in 2018 BJP enjoys 41% vote share against Congress’s 2% and Communists 44%.
Election in 59 seats for the 60-member Assembly was held on February 18. Polling was countermanded in one seat due to the death of a CPI(M) candidate.
Today’s victory has further shrunk communists to just one state – Kerala. Congress has not been able to win even one seat in Tripura.
With Tripura victory, BJP has further made its presence felt among Bengalis. The party had not only did better in West Bengal in previous Lok Sabha election but also had got Bengali votes in Assam and Jharkhand.
Confident Ram Madhav, a BJP leader who has strong RSS background claims that BJP will rule in all three North Eastern states – Tripura, Nagaland and Meghalaya that went to poll.
It should be mentioned here that BJP-NDPP alliance in Nagaland is near half mark but not above it. Individually NPP is still ahead of others. In Meghalaya, Congress is the largest single party but still short of majority. Only alternative will be NPP plus alliance.
