Notice for removal of speaker moves ahead, Congress MLAs complete formality
March 22, 2018
Gandhinagar:
The notice by deputy leader of opposition Shailesh Parmar for moving a motion for removal of Gujarat Assembly speaker Rajendra Trivedi from his post was today finally came in the house and was supported by around 40 Congress MLAs for further course of action.
Now as per rule it should be brought for discussion and division of vote on the floor of the house within 7 working days. Notably, the ongoing budget session would end on March 28.
Notably, so far such notice under article 179 of the constitution or notices of no-confidence motion has been brought in the Gujarat assembly over a dozen times but never once discussion took place on them.
Even now, backdoor negotiations between main opposition Congress and ruling BJP to resolve the matter have not ended.
Congress whip Amit Chavda said that his party was ready to back-track if the suspension of its 3 MLAs, Pradip Dudhat, Amrish Der and Baldevji Thakor was shortened for only up to the budget session.
‘CM Rupani says that for the honour of speaker’s post we should not push for discussion on the removal notice but he should understand that such a long term suspension of MLAs was also unprecedented. It should be cut short for only up to the end of the session,’ he said.
Notably, Dudhat and Der were suspended for 3 years and Thakor for one year on March 14 after chaos and attempt of attack inside the house that day.
Parmar had given the notice on February 28 under article 179 of the constitution for moving a motion for removal of speaker from his post. Parmar had given the notice after the decision of Trivedi to suspend Congress MLAs from the house for the day that day after ruckus on the issue of tax on petrol and diesel in the state. As per the rule the notice should be given 14 days in advance after which the resolution is moved in the house for voting on it within 7 working days.
Congress has alleged that Trivedi, the BJP MLA from Raopura in Vadodara was elected as speaker with consensus but he was not behaving properly with opposition members.
