Asaram Bapu guilty of rape, given imprisonment till death by Jodhpur Court in 2013 case

Ahmedabad: A special court in Jodhpur today held Asaram Bapu guilty of rape and gave him imprisonment till death. The SC/ST court of special judge Madhu Sudan Sharma, Jodhpur metro, pronounced the verdict in the case against Asaram and four of his associates. In 2013, a 16-year-old girl had accused Asaram Bapu of rape on the intervening night of August 15 and 16 at his ashram in Rajasthan. A case was lodged against Asaram and four others – Sanchita alias Shilpi, Sharad Chandra alias Sharat Chandra, Prakash and Shiva alias Sava Ram Hethvadiya – who were associates of Asaram at that time. Sanchita alias Shilpi and Sharad Chandra alias Sharat Chandra were sentenced to twenty years imprisonment each, while Prakash and Shiva were acquitted. The verdict was delivered by Special Judge Madhusudhan Sharma in a makeshift court at the Jodhpur Central Jail, where the self-styled godman has been lodged since 2013.
