February 06, 2020
Ahmedabad: A unique exhibition of pens, PenExpo 2020, first-of-it- kind in Gujarat, with an objective to give a boost to the crisis-hit pen Industry in India, will be held here from February 7 to 9 in which over 50 leading brands of pens from 13 countries and around 100 types of different coloured inks and some of the rare old pens would be put on display.
Addressing a press conference the organizer of the expo to be held in Seema Hall in Prahaldnagar locality of the city and owner of the leading stationary firm Global Distributors, Tushar Vaghela and his partners Pathik Mehta and Hardeep Panchal today said that the Indian pen industry has suffered a lot due to the ever increasing use of gadgets like laptops, tablets etc in the field of education and drawing etc. ‘It has virtually broken the backbone of the Industry which has seen a de-growth of 20% in last one year. The Indian brands were almost dead while the foreign brands were somehow pulling on. If this trend continued the Industry would completely die in a few year’s time,’ he said.
Vaghela said that contrary to India, the pen Industry in Europe and the US was not in that bad a shape. ‘They still allow fountain pens in educational institutions for things like calligraphy training and drawing etc. Through the expo we would urge the people to save the industry by promoting the use of pens. Two vintage counters would also be made in the expo to showcase very old rare pens. Well-known pen collectors like Yusuf Mansoor from Patna in Bihar, Chwan Ganguly from Kolkata and Bhupesh Shah from Ahemdabad would also participate in the event and interact with the visitors,’ he added.
Mehta said that all the three types of pens viz- Fountain pens, ball pens and roller pens would be put on display including 10 Indian brands. Some of the initial models of reputed company Parker would also be on display. Prominent people from the professions closely associated with use of pens like lawyers, architects, doctors and chartered accountants have also been invited in it. The organizing firm was also promoting calligraphy, doodle making etc in 10 reputed universities in Gujarat including CEPT for promotion of use of pens.
To a query Panchal said that a counter would also be set up in the expo for repair of faulty old but expensive models of pens. All the visitors would be gifted with a pen too and the entry would be completely free. He said that the erstwhile famous Indian pen brands like Kenwrite (Kanpur Writers) and Indore based Click which were once doing roaring business in India have also seen a major set back now. They were doing supply work for various famous foreign brands now.
