New Delhi: The central government has through an amendment in Motor Vehicles Act, decided the minimum fare for auto rickshaws Rs 18 per 1.2 kms after amending the provision of Motor Vehicle Act 1988 and ordered each RTO of the state to execute minimum and maximum fares.

The rickshaw drivers can charge maximum Rs 2.60 per kilometre in addition to minimum fares for a journey of 1 to 5 kms. They can also charge a luggage fare of Rs 1 per item for luggage over 15 kgs, which will be in force only within the borders of municipal corporations. They can charge a waiting charge of Rs 1 per minute for the waiting.

The minimum waiting charge can be demanded for an hour within the city limit and for 2 hours outside the city. The rickshaw drivers can demand a surcharge of 50 percent on the basic fare from 11 pm to 5 am at night. DeshGujarat
