Gandhinagar: Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh(RSS) affiliated farmers’ outfit Bharatiya Kisan Sangh (BKS) has announced a state-wide protest if the electricity supply issues are not resolved within 72 hours. Gabhubhai Chaudhary of BKS said the single point demand is 8-hour regular power supply to farmers. Gabhubhai said farmers don’t get reply when they contact the power supply offices. All they want to know is when electricity supply would resume.
Gabhubhai said, this problem is witnesses just in last two months. Prior to that the power supply was regular in Gujarat. He said once upon a time there was 16 hours power supply. Gradually it was curtailed to 8 hours. But if it is further scaled down below 8 hours, then it is not possible to do farming even through drip irrigation and sprinklers.
The farmers today gathered at Pethapur with their tractors to do a hunger strike. However, the police held them midways and prevented their entry to Gandhinagar where State assembly session was underway. The farmers from the surroundings of Gandhinagar decided to gather at Electricity Board office in Pethapur for hunger strike. They were held midways by the police. The farmers alleged that they haven’t received the 8-hour electricity supply and they get 6-hour electricity supply instead of that nowadays. The farmers have demanded for 8-hour electricity supply as per the old timetable.
Meanwhile in parallel protest, the congress MLAs protested at the gate of state assembly over the electricity issue. Some of Congress MLAs including Vimal Chudasama removed their shirts in protest.
