Ahmedabad: The Madhavpura police have filed a complaint against a company in the publication business under the SC/ST Atrocities Act for allegedly printing demeaning stuff about tribal societies.
The stuff was printed in a book for Semester 4 of the Sociology course of Saurashtra University. The police action was a result of the stuff going viral.
A sanitation superintendent with the AMC said he received a viral whatsapp message about a chapter in the book for Semester 4 of BA Sociology course of Saurashtra University.
The book was published by R Jamnadas Company named Kautilya Krut Prashnamsamput. The book in Gujarati language had a chapter on AIDS and cited Prostitution as a cause. One particular sentence, where it says that prostitution goes on unchecked in cities, villages and tribal communities, is particularly causing lot of distress to the tribal community.
The AMC employee said that some tribal students of the Saurashtra University brought this to the notice of several people. Such a sentence that prostitution is rife among tribal communities is tantamount to stereotyping them, particularly when one considers that this book has been part of the curriculum for a long time.
The Book has now been withdrawn by the company. DeshGujarat.
