Webseries director arrested for insulting the tricolor

Ahmedabad: Web series director Avinash Das has been arrested by the Ahmedabad Detection of Crime Branch (DCB) from Mumbai in the case of making viral on social media forums images of the national tricolor painted on the body of a female artist from Canada.

Along with these images, he had also posted comments related to the national anthem. The police had filed an offence under the Prevention of Insult to National Honor Act. DCB sources have indicated that Avinash Das made attempts to get anticipatory bail but was arrested after the court dismissed his petition.

A team of Ahmedabad DCB (Detection of Crime Branch) reached Mumbai on Tuesday and arrested Das from his rented accommodation. He was brought to Ahmedabad late in the night with the help of a transit warrant.

Mumbai-based filmmaker Avinash Das directed the 2017 film “Anaarkali Of Aarah” starring Swara Bhaskar, Sanjay Mishra,and Pankaj Tripathi. In addition to Raat Baaki Hai, which was released in 2021, he directed Netflix’s ‘She’ series.

It is worth mentioning that Avinash Das had also shared a 5-year-old public-function photograph of Union Home Minister Amit Shah with Jharkhand Cadre IAS officer, Puja Singhal, on social media along with his comments. Singhal was recently arrested by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in a money laundering case. A case of misleading people with the help of such old pictures and damaging the reputation of the union minister too has been filed against Das.

In the past also, the accused had spread fake news on social media. In October 2018 he shared a photoshopped image of Samit Patra and claimed that the BJP spokesperson referred to farmers as ‘Gaddar’ (traitors).
