Over 11 lakh students migrated to Govt Schools in 4 years in Gujarat

Gandhinagar: The free education policy of the Gujarat government in public schools of the state is showing positive results. There is a trend of reverse migration from private schools to govt run schools. A total of 11.3 lakh students from classes 1 to 8 shifted to govt schools in the last four years.

According to the data maintained by the state education department, Covid years of 2020-21 and 2021-22 saw the highest migration of 2.85 lakh and 3.49 lakh students respectively. At that time, this shift was attributed to a loss of income. However, even after the pandemic has sufficed a total of 2.24 lakh students reportedly migrated from private to public schools in the academic year 2022 – 23.

Principal education secretary Vinod Rao said that this migration trend had started some five years back. “Parents admitting their children in government schools from private setups is a heartening sign of the improved quality of education in government schools,” said Rao.

The bureaucrat credited this shift to the good changes in the education system such as online attendance of both students and teachers, 60,000 smart classes, centralized assessment of students on a weekly basis and student-wise, subject-wise report cards of each ward using the Vidya Samiksha Kendra Education Command and Control Centre.
