Ahmedabad: The Joint Commissioner of Food and Drug Control Administration of the state government informed the Gujarat High court through an affidavit that a closure notice is issued to as many as 344 meat shops.
In the affidavit in the PIL case filed by one Dharmendra Fofani, the FDCA stated that 344 petty food businesses are found in violation of 2011 regulations regarding animal slaughter.
Moreover, the court was informed that the commissionerate has instructed its officials to initiate criminal and civil prosecution against the owners of these businesses under section 42 of the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006.
The Petitioner has claimed that the department has failed to control slaughterhouses. It states that only eight slaughterhouses in the state have authorised licenses. In spite of this, more than 300 slaughterhouses are running in the shops licensed as food businesses under the Food and Safety Standards Act.
