Immediately shut illegal slaughter houses: HC to Gujarat Govt

Ahmedabad: Gujarat High-Court ordered the state government to immediately close the illegal slaughter houses and mutton shops in the state.

Gujarat High Court, during the hearing of a PIL over illegal slaughter houses in the state, ordered the food safety commissioner to take civil and criminal actions against the unstamped mutton shops and slaughterhouses running without license and immediately close them. The high court ruled that they don’t find the report about mutton shops submitted by the state authority reliable. The high court has ordered the member secretary of district legal service authority of each district to submit a detailed report about slaughterhouses and mutton shops at district and taluka level.

The high court stated that the authorities have only issued notices to observe the guidelines of Food Safety Standards Act instead of taking strict legal actions against the merchants selling mutton and chicken without license or registration. The high court stated that the contempt proceedings should be done for not obeying the ruling of the supreme court intentionally.

The state government had stated in the affidavit that the committees were formed in all the 8 municipal corporations and 156 municipalities of the state regarding slaughterhouses.
