Gujarat govt to form a panel for Uniform Civil Code in the State

Gandhinagar: Gujarat has taken an important step towards implementation of the Uniform Civil Code (UCC). The State has decided to form a panel for implementation of the Uniform Civil Code in Gujarat. The decision was taken today in cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel.

Under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel has taken a historic decision in the cabinet meeting today – of forming a committee for implementing the Uniform Civil Code in the state – said Gujarat Minister of State for Home, Harsh Sanghavi in a press conference held at the State BJP headquarters here.

BJP ruled Uttarakhand was first state to form the expert committee to examine ways for the implementation of a Uniform Civil Code (UCC) and for seeking public opinion on the plan through a website.

According to union minister Parshottam Rupala, the committee shall be chaired by a retired Judge of Gujarat High Court and it will have four members. Rupala said the tenure of committee will be fixed. The scope of work of committee will also be announced later.

The panel appointed in May this year in Uttarakhand has two retired judges of the High Court, a social worker, a retired IAS officer and a Vice Chancellor of local university. The website of Uttarakhand Government’s UCC committee informs that – a Committee of Experts will examine the relevant laws regulating personal civil matters of residents of Uttarakhand and to prepare draft law/laws or suggest changes in existing laws on the subject that includes marriage, divorce, property rights, succession/inheritance, adoption, maintenance, custody and guardianship. The Committee has also been tasked to prepare a report on implementing a Uniform Civil Code in Uttarakhand.
