IAS removed from Elections duties for over Instagram Photos

New Delhi: An Instagram post cost an officer assigned to election duties his posting. Abhishek Singh, an IAS (Indian Administrative Service) officer, was removed by the Election Commission for apparently flaunting his posting on Instagram, sources said today.

Reportedly, the election commissions order said that “Abhishek Singh had used Instagram for sharing his posting/joining as General Observer and had used his official position as a publicity stunt.”

According to sources, the Election Commission had “taken a very serious view” of the officer’s Insta post and so, he “has been relieved immediately of his duties as General Observer and has been debarred from any election-related duty till further orders.”

Abhishek Singh, an officer from the Uttar Pradesh cadre, was chosen as the general observer for the Bapunagar and Asarwa assembly districts in Ahmedabad ahead of the Gujarat election next month.

However, the officer posted two images on social media, In one, he is positioned next to a government vehicle that has “Observer” printed on the front and a beacon. The caption read, “Joined as Observer for Gujarat elections.”

In a different post, he was pictured grinning into the camera alongside three additional officials and an armed security guard.

The officer was ordered to leave the constituency immediately and report to his parent cadre. All government facilities provided to him in Gujarat were also taken away, including the car featured in his posts.

Mr Singh has been replaced by Krishan Bajpai, another IAS (Indian Administrative Service) officer.
