Shankar Chaudhary elected Speaker of Gujarat Assembly unopposed

Gandhinagar: Tharad legislator Shankarbhai Chaudhary today was elected unanimously as the Speaker of the Gujarat State Assembly. Shankarbhai’s name for the post was proposed by Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel. It was supported by Health minister Rushikesh Patel.

Chaudhary had yesterday filed a nomination for the post. He was the only MLA to file a nomination. He had earlier resigned from the primary membership of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) as per the convention. A one-day session of the State Assembly is convening today after BJP’s historic 156-seat victory in the elections. Chaudhary had been previously a minister of State in the government. He is also a leading name in the cooperative sector of Gujarat. He has headed Banas Dairy and Banas Bank of Banaskantha district.

Meanwhile, Shahera BJP legislator Jethabhai Bharwad has been unopposed and elected as the Deputy Speaker. Among the items scheduled in today’s one-day session of the State assembly is 1. The motion of thanks for the governor’s address, 2. Obituary references, 3. Discussion of the motion of thanks for the Governor’s address and Government Bills and Government Business.

While the post of Speaker avails status equal to the Cabinet minister, the post of Deputy Speaker avails the status equal to the Minister of State.

Yesterday 181 out of a total of 182 newly elected legislators took an oath which was administered by Protem Speaker and Vadodara MLA Yogesh Patel. However one legislator, Jayesh Radadiya could not take oath as he was travelling abroad.
