PM Modi recalls Gujarat experiences in Disaster Management

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi today inaugurated the 3rd Session of the National Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction (NPDRR) at Vigyan Bhawan here.

While addressing the event PM recalled his experiences, related to disaster management as the Chief Minister of Gujarat, “In India, systems related to disaster management have always been local, the solutions have been local & strategy has been local too. The people of Kutch live in mudhouses called Bhunga. Kutch was the centre of a massive earthquake at the beginning of this century. But there was no impact on these Bhunga houses, surely it is a lesson for technology.” he said.

The PM also recalled that for 50 years after India’s Independence, there was no law to handle disasters. In 2001, after the Kutch Earthquake, Gujarat was the first to enact a state disaster management act. Later, on basis of that act Central govt in 2005 made the National Disaster management act.

“When I was in Gujarat, there was a river in Kheda district that witnesses floods once in 5 years. There was a year when there were 5 floods in a year. We sent messages in Gujarati language in English text to people, and that timely communication helped ensuring zero life loss,” he further said.

NPDRR is a multi-stakeholder platform constituted by the Government of India to facilitate dialogue, sharing experiences, views, ideas, action-oriented research & explore opportunities in the area of Disaster Risk Reduction. DeshGujarat
