June 22, 2023
New Delhi: The Union government has withdrawn the Livestock and Livestock Products (Importation and Exportation) Bill 2023 following objections raised by animal welfare groups.
Representatives from these groups met with Union Animal Husbandry Minister Parshottam Rupala earlier this week and expressed their concerns about the draft bill.
A note issued by the Union Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry, and Dairying on June 20, 2023, stated that during the consultation, it was recognized that more time is needed to comprehend the proposed draft and provide further comments and suggestions. The note also mentioned that representations expressing concerns about the draft bill, which involves animal welfare and related emotional aspects, have been received and that wider consultation is necessary. Taking these views into account and with the approval of the competent authority, the proposed draft bill has been withdrawn, as stated in the ministry note. DeshGujarat
