Pilgrims from Gujarat stuck in bad weather during Amarnath Yatra
July 08, 2023
Surat: The ongoing Amarnath Yatra has been severely impacted by continuous snow and rain over the past four to five days, leaving pilgrims in adverse weather conditions. Currently, 20 pilgrims from Vadodara and 10 from Surat are stuck in the midst of their journey amidst the inclement weather in Amarnath.
The pilgrims, who have sought shelter in rest tents along the route, are facing significant challenges. In a heartfelt video testimonial, one of the stranded pilgrims from Surat described the relentless snow and rain that has saturated their tents and belongings. They have endured these harsh conditions for the past three consecutive days, with mattresses and rugs soaked, and even warm clothing proving inadequate against the biting cold.
The Surat pilgrims, including a 14-year-old girl, have made a plea for assistance through their video appeal. The deteriorating conditions and extreme cold have led to illnesses among some of the women in the group.
Among the affected pilgrims is a group of 14 individuals, including Haresh Mushrif, Kamlesh Taylor, Mahesh Shah, Ashutosh Upasane, and Brijesh Panchal, along with their wives and four children. They embarked on the pilgrimage to Baba Amarnath on July 4, with plans to return on July 6 after paying their respects. Unfortunately, their journey was disrupted by unfavorable weather conditions, including continuous rainfall and bone-chilling cold. Haresh Mushrif, who has been in a tent in Panchtarani for the past three days, shared their plight, describing the relentless rain, subzero temperatures, depletion of medical supplies, and the challenges they are facing. The tent is saturated, and the cost of rent has escalated. Initially, it was ₹1500 per person, and subsequently, ₹1000 per person per day. The situation is exceedingly difficult, with ice layers forming and a red alert issued for July 9.
Other pilgrims echoed similar hardships, enduring 72 hours of continuous rain, freezing temperatures, soaked tents, drenched mattresses, and difficulties with cash and meals. Some have fallen ill, and the forecast predicts more rain, exacerbating their situation. They urgently appeal for rescue and transportation to Pahalgam to avert any potential tragedies.
Speaking about the incident, Hemaliben Boghwala, the Mayor of Surat, expressed that the Amarnath Yatra holds great significance as a center of faith for all devotees. The first phase of the Yatra has already commenced, and the heavy rainfall has unfortunately led to the trapping of a few travelers from Gujarat, including those from Surat. The authorities have been informed, and efforts are underway to coordinate with local officials. The Gujarat government is in constant contact with the Amarnath administration to gather information and ensure the prompt evacuation of all stranded pilgrims. DeshGujarat
