Drugs from Canada, US, Thailand to Gujarat via parcels: Cocaine and Cannabis worth ₹50 Lakhs seized

Ahmedabad: The City Cyber Crime Police and Customs Department, in a joint operation, have intercepted and seized a consignment of narcotics, including cocaine and ganja valued at over Rs. 50 lakhs, that had arrived at Ahmedabad airport from Canada. The origin of these foreign drugs is currently the subject of investigation, with authorities examining potential links to Khalistani connections. Several other agencies have also joined forces to conduct a comprehensive inquiry into this matter.

Cyber crime branch of Ahmedabad City and Customs Department, both agencies received information that some accused use the dark web on social media and order drugs from foreign countries by making payments through cryptocurrency. After a probe, an NDPS offence has been registered. Cyber Crime and Customs department officials reached a foreign post office and recovered 5 kg 927-gram high-quality processed synthetic ganja worth over Rs. 47 lakh and cocaine worth over Rs. 2 lakh – in total over Rs. 50 lakh worth of drugs. Various accused sent parcels from America, Canada, and Thailand in which drugs were found in toys, notepads, books, etc.

The modus operandi for transporting the drugs is unique in this case, as the narcotics were converted into a liquid form and attached to the pages of a book, rendering them virtually undetectable. The pages when soaked in boiled water would release drugs in powder form. A tip received by the Ahmedabad Cyber Crime and Customs Department led to the unraveling of the entire operation. In a joint operation, the authorities confiscated narcotics which were being transported through a courier company as a part of this elaborate scheme.

It’s noteworthy that just two days prior to this operation, law enforcement authorities in Kutch made a significant seizure of narcotics. East Kutch police recovered a staggering 80 kg of narcotics from the beach. Preliminary findings indicate that the estimated value of these narcotics exceeds ₹ 800 crores.
