Justice Cheekati Manavendranath Roy takes oath as judge of Gujarat High Court

Ahmedabad: Justice Cheekati Manavendranath Roy took the oath as a judge of the Gujarat High Court this morning. Gujarat HC’s Chief Justice Sunita Agarwal administered the oath to Justice Roy. This appointment comes after the Government of India granted its consent for the transfer of 16 judges based on the recommendation of the Supreme Court collegium.
Justice Cheekati Manavendranath Roy, who previously served in the Andhra Pradesh High Court, has now been transferred to the Gujarat High Court. This move increases the total number of judges in the Gujarat High Court to 30.
Justice Cheekati’s profile:
Hails from Parvathipuram in Vizianagaram District. Born on 21st May, 1964 in a traditional agricultural family to Cheekati Narahari Rao and Smt. Vijaya Lakshmi at Visakhapatnam.
Had Elementary and High School education in R.C.M. School at Parvathipuram and St. Aloysius High School in Visakhapatnam.
Studied Intermediate in Government Junior College, Parvathipuram and completed Degree in S.V. Degree College, Parvathipuram. Studied Law in M.V.P. Law College, Vizag. Enrolled as an Advocate in July, 1988 in the Bar Council of Andhra Pradesh.
Joined Parvathipuram Bar Association in August, 1988. Practised as an Advocate in Parvathipuram and Vizianagaram from 1988 to 2002 for 14 years. He is the third generation lawyer in the hierarchy of the family. His grandfather late Cheekati Parasuram Naidu was a reputed Advocate, Statesman and a dynamic political leader. Learnt basics in Law from his junior paternal uncle Sri Ch.B.G. Tilak Roy.
After practising for 14 years, selected as District and Sessions Judge (Grade-II) in State Higher Judicial Service in the year 2002. After undergoing training in Andhra Pradesh Judicial Academy, worked as I Additional District Judge, Anantapur; VI, V and IV Additional District Judges, Visakhapatnam; Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge, Hyderabad; II and I Additional District Judges and Principal District Judge, Visakhapatnam; Principal District Judge, Krishna at Machilipatnam and Chairman, Andhra Pradesh VAT Tribunal, Visakhapatnam. Worked as Registrar General of High Court of Judicature at Hyderabad for the State of Telangana and the State of Andhra Pradesh from 03-7-2015 to 31-12-2018. After establishment of the High Court of Andhra Pradesh, at Amaravati, he is the first Registrar General of the High Court of Andhra Pradesh from 01-01-2019 till his elevation as a Judge of the High Court of Andhra Pradesh on 20-6-2019.
Interested in sports, particularly in Cricket. Married to Smt. Lakshmi and the couple is blessed with two daughters Kum. Cheekati Anisha Naidu and Kum. Cheekati Reshma Sai. Appointed as a Permanent Judge of the High Court of Andhra Pradesh, at Amaravati on 12-6-2019. First Judge to be appointed after constitution of High Court of Andhra Pradesh w.e.f. 01-01-2019.
